Apple reported that its third-quarter net earnings were $3.253 billion or $3.51 per share, up from $1.828 billion or $2.01 per share in the same quarter last year.

Net sales for the quarter rose to $15.70 billion, from $9.734 billion in the prior year quarter. Apple said that it sold 3.47 million Macs during the quarter, representing a new quarterly record and a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 61 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

Apple First Quarter Results: 22,727,000 iPods sold (new record)

So ist das eben mit den Microsoft Produkten … Pünktlich zum Jahreswechsel haben die vormals als Konkurrenz zu Apples iPod gehandelten MP3 Player namens Zune ihren Geist aufgegeben. Microsofts Software für den Zune wusste anscheinend nicht mit dem Schaltjahr umzugehen. Der in der Netzgemeinde unter dem Titel Z2K die runde machende Fehler, dürfte indes nur wenige User treffen – denn wer bitte schön nutzt schon einen Zune?

Microsoft hat auch gleich eine Lösung parat:

Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.
Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain—this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.
Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that’s 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).
Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.

Der Spiegel schreibt dazu:

Doch keine Bange: “Das Problem sollte sich in den nächsten 24 Stunden lösen”, so eine Nachricht an die irritierten Zune-Besitzer auf der offiziellen Web-Seite. Die interne Uhr der Geräte sollte sich “morgen zu Mittag GMT automatisch zurücksetzen”. Zuvor müsse man jedoch den Akku des Zune leerlaufen lassen, was, so die Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung, automatisch geschehen werde: “Da der Player eingefroren ist, wird die Batterie sich entleeren” – und zwar “in ein paar Stunden”. Anschließend müsse man möglicherweise den Player neu mit seinem Computer synchronisieren, um die Abspiel-Lizenzen für gekaufte Musik (DRM) zu erneuern.

Mein Tipp ist viel simpler: Just buy an Apple iPod …

Apple verkaufte in den letzten 3 Monaten:

iPhones: 6.9 Mio.
Macs: 2.6 Mio. (+ 21%)
iPods: 11.1 Mio. (+ 8%)

Gross Margin: 34.7%

Apple verkaufte so viele Macs wie noch nie – ein Plus von 21% im Vergleich zum Vorjahrszeitraum.

Maybe there’s no economic crisis for the US Kids – according to a survey by Piper Jaffray 8% of them own an iPhone, 22% want one:

- 8% own iPhones, up from from 6% in Spring 2008.
- 22% of students surveyed expect to buy an iPhone in the next 6 months, up from 9% in Spring 2008
- Of students expecting to buy a mobile phone, 33% specified an iPhone.
- iPod market share rose to 84% from 82% in Fall 2007.
- Of the 40% of students who legally purchase music online, 93% said they use iTunes (up from 79% in Fall 2007).

Im CNBC Interview spricht Steve Jobs über die neue alte Form des iPod nanos: der fatboy ipod nano kam einfach nicht so gut an. Interessant auch seine Äußerung zum aktuellen Microsoft Werbespot. Des weiteren verspricht Jobs für Freitag ein großes iPhone Firmware Update, welches “Tons of Bugs” beseitigen soll.

Insgesamt wirkt Apples CEO trotz aller gegenteiligen Bekundungen auf mich angeschlagen und sehr stark abgemagert. Hoffen wir in seinem Interesse und das meiner Apple Aktien, dass er sich bald erholt!
